As a child I would visit Acadia every summer with my family. One year in the late 1980's we hiked Dorr Mountain, a mountain we'd climbed many times but via different trails. My father would keep a journal of the hikes we'd do but unfortunately didn't put the name of the trail on this particular day.
High up on the mountain, the trail followed the bottom of a cliff, with views to the right. A large boulder sat near the ledge with space to crawl under it. My mother remarked on the neat little cave, I crawled under the boulder for a few feet but was hoping for something bigger, a real cave. We rounded the corner and there it was. To our right, in the side of the cliff was what appeared to be a doorway, maybe five feet tall, a few feet wide. We all got excited but didn't have a flashlight with us. I was small enough to fit in. I remember it going in about 15 feet or so before taking a turn to the left but lost the natural light of the sun and didn't venture any further.
We returned the next year with flashlights but never found the cave, or even that section of trail. We searched again and again, every trail on that mountain but never found the cave. To this day all we have are our memories of it and the journal entry that proves we aren't crazy and merely dreamed it up.
Knowing Acadia as I do today, they probably rerouted the trail for one reason or another. They do that a lot. I still hope to find the cave someday although I doubt I will fit in it like I did as a child. But if you have any information on the lost cave of Dorr Mountain I would love to figure out where it might be.
